Dave and Lois Zonderman, Walkabout
We would like to invite our friends in both SMSA and CCYC on our summer cruise.
Dave and Lois Zonderman, onboard Walkabout, are planning a northern cruise to Long Island Sound this season. Our time frame is late May through the month of June. We will be cruising to the Annapolis/Baltimore area the week before Memorial Day with the Southern Maryland Sailing Association’s Northern Bay cruise. (SMSA) We plan to be in Swan Creek on Memorial Day weekend with the Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club. Our northern cruise will begin from Swan Creek.
From Swan Creek our plans will be based on wind and weather. The tentative plan is to head north to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, making an overnight stop at Chesapeake City. Heading out early, we will transit the canal and head south on Delaware Bay. There are several overnight anchorages available for this portion of the trip. The next stop is planned to be Cape May, NJ. We are investigating marinas in Cape May and plan one to two nights in Cape May to relax, go to the beach and enjoy this historic south Jersey town.
From Cape May we plan an early departure to transit the Jersey shore to Atlantic Highlands/Sandy Hook, NJ. Overnight anchorages are available in that area. The next leg will be through New York Harbor, up the East River and into Long Island Sound, with a stop in City Island, NY.
As we are members of the City Island Yacht Club, we plan to take a mooring there – transient moorings are available at CIYC; there are also several good marinas available for those who prefer to be dockside. We plan to spend several days in City Island. It is a wonderful re-provisioning town, with grocery stores, delis, laundries and many restaurants. Transportation is also easily available to NYC if anyone wishes a day in Manhattan.
From City Island the trip will be based on wind and weather conditions. Some of our possible stops will be Oyster Bay, NY, Port Jefferson, NY, Connecticut River - Saybrook, CT, Mystic, CT, 3 Mile Harbor - the Hamptons, NY, Block Island, RI and Narragansett Bay, Newport, RI. As we have previously cruised this area for 18 years, we are familiar with all these locations. There are many lovely anchorage areas, as well as moorings and marinas available in all the above mentioned places.
Our return trip is planned to be back in Chesapeake Bay by July 4th, if all goes well. We would love to have any of our boating friends join us for all or part of this trip. If interested, please contact us at sail274@verizon.net or phone 410-326-1561.
We want everyone to understand that the plans for this trip are based on the ability to sail as much as possible, without too many long motor runs. Decisions of where to travel and when will be made based on safety and ease of travel and on group decisions of those joining us.
