January 2000

View from the Bridge

Pete Denholm, Commodore

We are not alone in our appreciation of Catalinas. In the fall of 1999, SAIL magazine invited readers to inspect, test-sail, and send their picks for the 10 best new boats from 36 nominees for SAIL's Top 10 Award for 2000. The reader ballots and SAIL's nine test-sailing judges picked the Catalina 310 as one of its Top 10 Boats for 2000. The write-up about the Catalina 310 is on page 71 of Sail's February issue.

The number of people who stopped by the Catalina display at the Sail Expo boat show in Atlantic City confirms Catalina's popularity. Karen and I volunteered at the Catalina Owners' Association booth for the Sail Expo. The booth was located right in the middle of the Catalina display boats and we were often mistaken for Catalina sales people. When we weren't standing behind the booth or in a casino gambling, we were looking at all the other new boats and checking out the equipment vendors. It made me think about the upcoming sailing season and our club's scheduled events.

CCYC's annual planning meeting was held at Wayne and Joan Savage's house on January 9th. We had a large turnout with over 15 members present. I want to thank everyone who participated for the great food and ideas for this year's events. We have a full schedule with a variety of activities for monthly meetings and a variety of sailing destinations for our cruises. Check out this year's sailing schedule included in the newsletter. Now's the time to mark your calendars! You know the old saying, the more the merrier, so I hope to see many of you at our events this year.

Speaking of events, our February meeting will be a joint meeting with the International Catalina 36 Fleet 3 club on February 12th. It will be a luncheon and diesel engine class. Come find out how to maintain your diesel engine and meet some Catalina 36 club members. See Ray's article for more details.

See you at the diesel class.
