Ray Nieves, Commodore
The year 2000 was another memorable year
for CCYC members. Thank you, Commodore Pete Denholm (Retired) for your energy,
good-natured smiles, fun, laughter and leadership. All of us who have had the
pleasure of sailing, rafting and party time with you and Karen will miss you
this summer.
As I sit here today, I reflect on past years of CCYC events
and begin the exercise of planning for 2001. I am excited about what our club
will do this Spring and Summer and look forward to new
experiences.
Again, CCYC members led the Nation with non-party political
success. After a campaign unmarred with recounts, litigation and Supreme Court
decisions, non-party constituents and elected officers celebrated the
uncontested successes of the year! Last month at Nieves' Landing, CCYC held the
annual Christmas party or Inaugural Ball for incoming elected officials. The
event was well attended with vessel representatives dressed in the most formal
land going attire.
Crews, Captains, First Mates and guests from sailing
vessels Aire-Borne, Ayewash, Classie Chassie II, Coelumar, Foxfire, Irwins Ark,
Jubilee, Ragtime, Scimitar and Shermax began the holiday season with typical
CCYC gusto. Outgoing Commodore Pete surprised last year's officers with gifts
of ships flags, Sue Dennison presented plaques to the officers, with special
well deserved recognition to Joan Savage as our Treasurer, to Mike Davis for
his work as "webmaster" and special presentations for OOPS (ask Pete or me
about our oops----we tied). Also, during the evening festivities we exchanged
sailing related gifts in a fun gift exchange.
Each of the participating
crews provided various wonderful sea rations, with main courses prepared by
supply officer Carolyn Nieves. The club treasury provided special IV solutions,
continuously administered by ship's surgeon Lt. Commander B. Davis. Of course
the recipients of the IV solutions did not protest. In the tradition of CCYC we
could not merely be satisfied with liquid refreshments, of course there was a
need for nourishment which looked like a shark feeding frenzy (only kidding).
The staples prepared by the various crews provided wonderful energy and
strength, that's why we ate so much. K.P. duties were conducted by Aire-Borne,
Ayewash, Scimitar and Classie Chassie II crews.
As the crews took on
fuel and supplies beginning their departure to homeports, it appeared that all
were well prepared for their journey and up coming sailing season. Hopefully,
everyone had a good time; Carolyn and I enjoyed your company. The final party
clean up was interesting, which required painting the walls so my daughter
would not think we were so wild.....someone didn't like the wine (ha). Thank
you all for your contributions for the evening, for your fellowship and for
sharing your sailing experiences with all of us.
Now as Commodore, I
sincerely hope that this year will bring more growth to the club, with
continued traditional events, new ideas and new horizons. When we joined this
club, Carolyn and I did not know what to expect. What happened to us is that
Joan Savage called us, invited us to participate and be part of the club. Since
the beginning, Joan and the membership in general have made us feel welcome and
have kept us interested. I hope that each of us can help someone else feel good
about joining CCYC, or just attending some of our events.
In order for
us to have another memorable CCYC year, we need everyone's input, ideas and
participation. If you are available please try to attend the 2001 planning
meeting at the Savage's on Jan 20th. If you are unable to attend the meeting,
please email me
ClassieChassie@Erols.comwith
your ideas. Again, thank you and prepare for this sailing season with CCYC.

Wayne and Joan Savage will host a Member and "Cruise Planning" meeting,
with a Pot Luck dinner at their house on Saturday night, January 20th, at 7:00
PM. They request everyone bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert. Please call
them at 301-762-6752 to coordinate dishes.
For the planning session,
please bring your favorite cruise or anchorage. The plan is to have a monthly
club outing with a cruise captain/leader. We will try to spread the events out
along the bay so that everyone has an enjoyable summer.
Directions: Take
the Beltway to I-270 North. Take exit 5, Falls Road to the west, crossing
I-270. Continue west to the first traffic light and turn left on Wootton
Parkway. Take the next left to Pasture Brook Way and you will find Savage's
Landing at 1703, the second house on the right.
We look forward to
seeing everyone again.
