Ray Nieves, Commodore
The annual CCYC planning meeting was held
on January 20th at Savage's Landing. Thanks to the Savage's once again for
their hospitality and the good evening meal!
Although, on this night of
the Presidential Inauguration, with the bad weather, rain, sleet, and snow, the
meeting was well attended. Thanks to the representatives from Ayewash, Classie
Chassie 2, Elizabeth IV, Irwin's Ark, Jubilee, Ragtime, Scimitar and Surprise,
the planning meeting went well.
We have established a proposed schedule
of meetings, raft ups, a weeklong cruise and of course parties for the year
2001. The raft up schedule has a few openings for "Raft Captain" and the
weeklong as well as Fourth of July plans are not complete. During the planning,
we attempted to take into account various calendar events, holidays and other
activities to include as many club members as possible. The raft cruises cover
as much of the Bay as possible to allow those from different areas to attend as
many events as practical.
Our first event of the year will include a
swap and sale of any used equipment you may want to bring to the Flag Raising
Brunch, to be held on April 14th. This will be a chance for each of us to empty
the old sea bag or sea locker and dust off those once prized sailing
goodies.
During the night's planning, Carolyn and I decided to take on
the Memorial Day weekend raft-up. As many of you know, and Philip was quick to
point out, last year the weekend was rain filled (and wine filled I might add).
Of course, as the Raft Captain, Philip pointed out, the weather was my
responsibility. Well Philip, news for you; while I can't control the weather,
in view of last year's raft-up I believe we will have a good time.
We
are all looking forward to the Spring launchings and we are all getting excited
about new adventures. With the past experiences we have heard about and those
we have witnessed, 2001 should be fun. Please join us during the year and be
part of the memories.
Good sailing and good fellowship.

The March Member Meeting will be at Mama Lucia's Restaurant in the
Dunkirk Shopping Center. We plan to start with a Social/Happy Hour at 5:30 and
follow at 6:30 with our speaker, Mr. Dave Abt, who will talk about heavy
weather sailing on the Bay. Mr. Abt lives aboard his Tayana 42 and runs Sea
Care of Annapolis, a company that helps sailors equip and prepare for
cruising.
Following the presentation, around 7:00, join us for dinner.
It is order from the menu and we will be in our own room. It's a good deal all
around.
To get to the meeting: Take Rt 4 South from I-495 beltway. After
approximately 22 miles you will see the Dunkirk Fire Station just past the
traffic light. Take the next driveway entrance on the right into the shopping
center.

For those who may not have heard, Pete and Karen Denholm are setting
sail (although not on Scimitar) for the South Pacific. They are leaving March
12th for a year of crewing aboard a couple of sailboats, a Corbin 39 at first
and later a Jeanneau 47. Their trek begins in Panama with a canal transit and
then it's on to the Galapagos Islands; Fatu Hiva and Hiva Oa (Marquesas
Islands); Tuamotu Archipelago; Moorea, Hauhine, Raiatea, Bora Bora; Maupiti,
and Maupihaa (French Polynesia); Penrhyn and Suwarrow (Cook Islands); Upolu
(Western Samoa); Tonga; Minerva Reef; and finally Bay of Islands and Auckland
(New Zealand) by November. Whew!
Their plan then is to tour New Zealand
and Australia by land until January and after that, see what opportunity
presents itself until they return home in March 2002.
They plan to send
me email and pictures of their trip and I will be posting their saga on our web
site for everyone to see ... and envy.
