View from the Bridge

Richard Schatz, Commodore

This will be my last message to you as Commodore and I would be remiss if I did not thank those who helped me this year. CCYC is after all a volunteer group and it takes more than one person to make all the events that the Club sponsors to make these things happen.

For example, Mike Davis is responsible for most of the communication to the members. From the postcards that you get for raftups to the website he administers, Mike gets us the info. His advice and wisdom has also given us valuable guidance over the years. Ray VanHorn , as Vice Commodore, has arranged our Dinner meetings and has provided us with informative and entertaining speakers. Joan Savage, our Past Treasurer, has kept our books faithfully for the last 6 years or so. She has made sure that things were paid for in a timely manner. We all participate in designing the schedule of meetings and cruises.

This past meeting we have voted in a new group of officers that promise to give us a terrific year of raftups and camaraderie. Ray VanHorn will move up to Commodore. He has some great ideas for extending the scope of our gatherings. Rich Miller has stepped up to the plate and has accepted the Vice Commodore position. Diane Benyus will now be taking care of finances as the new Treasurer. Jennifer Davis has been appointed Cruise Director. Her enthusiasm in helping to plan cruises and raftups should give us some memorable events. Call her with ideas for places and themes for our get-togethers. And finally, Mike Davis will continue on as Secretary / Web Master. His efforts in this position are greatly valued by us all.

I want to encourage you all to participate however you can in our raftups, or meetings. We want and need to know where you would like to go, what you want to do, and how you would like things done. The names and phone numbers of those mentioned above will be on our Newsletter and our website. There should be no reservations about calling any one of them. They will welcome your ideas.

Diane and I will be seeing you on the water and hope you can make it to the Christmas Party when we will celebrate our year together amid good company and with good cheer.

Fair Winds.

Membership renewal

As we come to the end of this sailing season L, we can start looking forward to the start of the next season J. That includes electing officers for the Club, planning new cruises and going to parties. That also includes renewing your membership and alas, paying dues. CCYC dues are $35 for each calendar year (January to December). The money is used to cover rental of the meeting places, speakers, the cost of publishing the newsletter, some of the expenses of CCYC parties and other business of running the club.

There is a Membership Renewal Form in this newsletter that includes all the information I have on file about you and your boat. I would appreciate it if you would take the time to check over the information and correct anything that is wrong or missing.

Additionally, we have a supply of CCYC burgees and they're available to members who do not already have one. The cost is $25 per burgee and you can include it with your dues.

Oktoberfest 2002

Joan and Wayne Savage, Jubilee

Oktoberfest was once again a time of good time and cheer for all who attended. The weather was great, with the wind 10-15 from the northwest. Just a couple of tacks and then a long reach directly to the West River. Jubilee dropped her sails as she entered the Rhode River and motored up the river. As we headed up the river, Gerry and Jeannie Helldorfer in Ragtime, one of those boats that, as Jerry describes it, "had lost its mast somewhere," came alongside to say hello and let us know they were going to join the raft.

We dropped the hook near Big Island, Winston's favorite destination. After Ragtime rafted up Al and Vickie Lohman in Laidback, arrived. They were followed shortly by Tim Feldman and Jae in Second Wind. Ray Van Horn and his crew in Scimitar, Sue and Walt Dennison in Foxfire, and Mike and Carla Grimes on Seaquel. The last to arrive was Sandy Berlin and crew, David and Adriane Robison on Kaimi. Sandy is a long time sailing friend of Joan's and former CCYC member.

After everyone had a chance to get their gear stowed and said hello to their neighbors, cocktail hour began with hors d'oeuvres and Oktoberfest bier and wine served aboard Jubilee with a little um-pa-pa music in the background. Happy hour was followed by a potluck dinner of German classics such as wurst, potato salad, sauerkraut, baked beans, and German chocolate cake to top it off.

Stories and tales continued until the wine was gone, when everyone decided it was time to turn in. The wind was calm so the raft remained intact. Bright and early Winston decided it was time for him to visit Big Island. He danced around the cabin until I got out of bed. We jumped into the dinghy to spend the next half hour exploring.

When we returned to the raft, coffee was brewing on several boats and breakfast preparations were getting underway. As people started to get going, so did the wind. At about 9 am someone noticed that we were "close" to the small raft behind us. "I don't think we were that close earlier." And they were right; the raft with the 8 boats on Jubilee's anchor had begun to drag when the wind picked up. So, at a very civilized hour, rather than the normal 3 am, the raft was broken and several boats decided to reform into two smaller rafts so we could enjoy the breakfasts that were being prepared.

Following breakfast the boats headed back out to the Bay to take advantage of the winds. The day was another wonderful one, with lots of sun and a good breeze. A great weekend to be on the water! I think we will do it again.
