Cat Tales

June 2004

View from the Bridge

Rich Miller, Commodore

Well, the season is getting into full swing, and the slips at the marina are beginning to fill up. Memorial Day weekend has come and gone. In case you were wondering, there was no Cat Tales in May. We're sorry we missed you last month, but your Commodore dropped the ball on getting his article together. I'll try to keep a better track record in the coming months.

The absence of a newsletter didn't seem to hurt attendance at our Wye River raft up. We were glad to see so many of you out on the water Memorial Day weekend. We had favorable winds from the Northwest that made for a good sail south under the Bay Bridge and up the Eastern Bay. Bucking the Memorial Day trend, the weather was ideal, and we had an amazing turnout of fourteen boats. Thanks to Mike and Bev Davis for hosting a memorable event, and thanks to Ed and Connie Dooley for the bow thruster demonstration (well, I did encourage people to incorporate educational experiences into each raft up). I hope everyone had a safe and uneventful passage back on Monday. With the Coast Guard and NOAA weather radio warning of potentially dangerous conditions, we were thinking of everyone on our way back to Rock Hall. Be sure to catch Captain Mike's recap inside this newsletter.

Speaking of events, thanks to everyone who made the Ice Breaker a success. Bernie Poppert was our host, and he did a fine job as a first time raft captain - well, on the water anyway. The rain held off long enough for everyone to enjoy the surroundings, and everyone contributed a memorable dish to share. Special recognition goes to Captain Wayne Savage who selflessly ferried everyone ashore to the pavilion in Quiet Waters Park, "Noah" style (two-by-two). Wayne, thanks for the effort above and beyond the call, and we owe you, Joan and Winston a dinghy ride.

If you are new to rafting up with the club or you have not participated yet this season, you may wish to go over CCYC's guidelines for joining a raft. Some important things to remember: contact the raft captain on the designated VHF channel as you enter the anchorage; the raft captain will direct you to your position in the raft and provide you with any information you need to know about the conditions; make sure to have your fenders deployed and your lines ready to hand off before you reach the raft; always approach from astern and coast to a stop beside the raft.

If you are technically inclined, please take the opportunity to check out CCYC's new web site. Mike Davis has moved the site to a new permanent home on its own domain at www.SailCCYC.org. Webmaster Mike has big plans for improvements to the site in the coming months, so make sure to stop by and visit from time to time to see what he has in store for us.

Plans have been disclosed for June's Catalina Rendezvous in Baltimore. Mike Davis recently sent out an announcement by e-mail with some of the details. If you have not made plans to join us at Inner Harbor Marina and you want to join in the fun, please make sure to get in touch with the marina and register your boat at Catalina's web site. Rumor has it that slips are at a premium. Exploring the Blue will be serving as the rallying point for the club. Check the details below. Smooth sailing.

Catalina Rendezvous
Baltimore Inner Harbor
June 25-27

Rich and Claire Miller, Exploring The Blue

Rich and Claire Miller will serve as the coordinators of the CCYC presence at this year's Catalina East Coast Rendezvous in Baltimore, Maryland. The event will take place at Baltimore's Inner Harbor Marina June 25th to 27th. Exploring the Blue has a slip reservation in the marina, and we will serve as the meeting point to gather the group for the festivities.

You must register for the event and make slip reservations separately. Registration for the rendezvous can be completed on Catalina's web site at https://www.catalinayachts.com/randevouse.cfm? part=east (note the spelling is incorrect but necessary to get you to the web site). Slip reservations can be made by calling Geather "Get" Norris at the marina at 410-837-5339 (please be aware that slips may be hard to come by if you have not made your reservations already).

If you plan on being at the rendezvous and you would like us to look for you, please feel free to contact us ahead of time by e-mail, Commodore@SailCCYC.org, or by phone at 610-725-8624. You may also reach us the day of the event by hailing us on VHF 72. We hope to see you there!

Icebreaker
May 1-2
Quiet Waters Park
Harness Creek

An enjoyable time was had by all at the May 1 & 2 Icebreaker held at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. It was a very brisk spring day with a favorable wind blowing.

Seven boats were anchored just off the pier before the boats began to drift and a break away was called. Those seven, and another three boats later to arrive, all anchored separately. Our many thanks to Wayne Savage (Jubilee) who, after safely depositing Joan and their dog Winston ashore, provided dinghy service to all the individually anchored boats. We were all greeted on land by our Commodore and his wife bearing fuel (charcoal). In addition, the gracious presence of the founding members of the CCYC, Allen and Hilda Gohrband, added a touch of class and needed supplies to the festivities. Delicious food was shared at the pot luck even a German Chocolate birthday cake (for Wayne). Champagne was handed around for the christening of the Lohman's new 350, Rhiannon. Quiet Waters is a beautiful spot and with a wedding going on in the park, it all added to a very delightful day.

Memorial Day Weekend Cruise and Raftup
May 29-31
Drum Point and Hunting Creek

Mike and Bev Davis, Ayewash

This year's Memorial Day weekend cruise was a great time. We finally had a weekend where it held off on the rain, well, for the most part. And it was one of the largest turnouts we've had in a long time - 14 boats!

Ayewash arrived at Saturday's anchorage, Drum Point in the Wye River, to find Gary and Carla Morgan (Sassy) already anchored there. They waited for us to anchor and then moved over to join us and start the raft. They were soon followed by Gerry and Jeanne Helldorfer (Ragtime II), Pete and Kathy Bruzik (Pekabu III), Rod and Pat Waite (Wye Waite II), Walt and Sue Dennison (Foxfire), Allan, Hilda and Kim Gohrband, with crew Steve (Running Free), Rich and Claire Miller (Exploring The Blue), Ed and Connie Dooley (Surprise), Richard Schatz and Diane Benyus (Scimitar), Brian, Hsiao, Grant and Julia Smith (Chili Breeze), Ken and Geri Manning (Gypsy), Robert and Kanako Beringer, with their 4-month old daughter (!) (Ukiyo), and Don and Mary Ann McBride (Coelumar)!

Everyone gathered on Ayewash with hors d'oeuvres and bottles of wine for the wine tasting. There was a lot of excellent wines to pick from and, boy, was there a lot of tasting going on!

Sunday turned out to be a grey day and the raft-up slowly broke up as some folks headed home and others headed for St Mikes for the afternoon. Ayewash finally weighed anchor around 2 pm and followed Ragtime down to Hunting Creek.

Entering Hunting Creek is normally not too complicated but a couple of ospreys tried to make it interesting by camouflaging the red marker with their nest. It was a big shock to a couple of boats when the entrance depth went from eight feet to four with little warning. But everyone made it to the raft and we had another large raft-up, with 10 boats this time.

Monday was another overcast day and everyone decided to head out early to beat the weather. Luckily, there was lots of wind without the severe weather as forecast and we made it home in no time.

Another good time with plenty of good people. Looks like the season is going great, with more to come.

New Web Site

As Commodore Rich pointed out, CCYC now has a new web address - www.SailCCYC.org. It's still being developed but there will be additional capabilities soon. I'll keep you posted as it changes but for now, please change your bookmark from the old address.

Also, as you're surfing the internet for sailing information, if you find a site that has links to other sites, check if it has a link to CCYC. If it has the old link (members.aol.com/SailCCYC) or none at all, let me know so I can contact the other webmaster and get it updated. You can contact me at Webmaster@SailCCYC.org.
