A few weekends ago, we had out-of-state guests come and visit. They stayed over Saturday night, and we wanted to do something fun Sunday, before they had to leave. It was forecast to be a beautiful, mild autumn day, so we decided to go for a sail. For once, the forecast was dead on. It was a gorgeous day and we sailed out the West River around 11:00 AM, with a good steady 10 knot breeze. We only sailed for a couple of hours, going north past Thomas Point Light not quite all the way to the Severn. We were back in the slip by 2:00 PM. It was a relatively short sail, but our friends were delighted. He had sailed a few times when he was a teenager, and she had never sailed at all. They had a marvelous time. They went on and on about how enjoyable it was to be out on the boat. Not only were the weather great and the wind perfect, we got to watch several other sailboats out on the water and the inevitable racing activity off Annapolis. While I always enjoy sailing, just watching our friends enjoy themselves so much, made this trip all the more enjoyable for me.

It made me re-appreciate how special it is to be able to enjoy sailing all the time. The Chesapeake Bay is a special place, and I think we should all feel privileged to have access to it. While the weather isn't always perfect and the wind is, more often than not, right on the nose, just remember: "A bad day on the water is better than a good day at work."

I hope all of you have had similarly memorable experiences this past sailing season. I hope at least some of those have been with the Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club.

Holiday Party
December 3rd, 5:00 PM
Van Tassells' Landing

Jon and Marilyn Van Tassell, Resolve

It's time to start planning for the Holidays, so mark your calendars for Saturday, December 3, 2005. That's the date for the CCYC Holiday Party at Van Tassell's Landing, aka 46909 Backwater Drive, Sterling, VA, 20164.

Start time will be 5:00 PM. Please bring a dish to pass, and let me know as early as possible what you would like to bring so that we don't end up with ten dishes of the same thing. The club will be providing a ham, beverages and paper goods, but we need you to supply vegetable, salad, or dessert dishes. Call Marilyn at 571-434-9036 or send her an email at RaftCaptain@SailCCYC.org to let her know what you will be bringing.

We will be holding the infamous Gift Swap (Known up north as the Yankee Swap), so please bring a gift (one per boat) of $10.00 value if you would like to participate. We encourage gag gifts as well as serious gifts, but remember, we are doing this for the fun and laughter it provides, so creative wrapping is always welcome.

Last year's party at Waite's Landing was great fun, so don't miss out this year. Plan now to be part of the Holiday festivities!

Fall Member Meeting
November 12th
Lohmans' Landing

Due to some challenges with restaurants, the Member Meeting on November 12th was at the Lohmans' house in West River, MD (not far from Pirate's Cove Restaurant.

We started at 4:00 PM with a Happy Hour and followed a casual, catered meal.

After we ate, we conducted a bit of club business, which included the election of CCYC officers for 2006. The following are the winners:
  • Commodore - Pete Bruzik
  • Vice Commodore - Bob Klimek
  • Treasurer - Diane Benyus
  • Secretary - Mike Davis
We wrapped up the meeting with Dave from West Marine. For those that remember Dave from last year, he brought a lot of gizmos from West Marine to give us ideas for just the right toy to put under the Christmas tree.

Membership renewal

As we come to the end of this sailing season, we can start looking forward to the start of the next season. That includes electing officers for the Club, planning new cruises and going to parties. That also includes renewing your membership and alas, paying dues. CCYC dues are $35 for each calendar year (January to December). The money is used to cover rental of the meeting places, speakers, the cost of publishing the newsletter, some of the expenses of CCYC parties and other business of running the club.

There is a Membership Renewal Form in this newsletter that includes all the information I have on file about you and your boat. I would appreciate it if you would take the time to check over the information and correct anything that is wrong or missing. This will be the information used in the Member Directory.

Additionally, we have a supply of CCYC burgees and they're available to members who do not already have one. The cost is $25 per burgee and you can include it with your dues.
