Cat Tales

January 2007

View from the Bridge

  Bob Klimek, Commodore

As I begin my tour as your Commodore for 2007, I am mindful that I am the 27th in a long line stretching back to 1981 when Hilda Gohrband, our gracious and charming Holiday Party hostess, was our first Commodore. We all are indebted to all of the Commodores that have preceded me for making CCYC a successful organization. In that regard, all past Commodores are listed on our Website. There are a lot of familiar names on that list. Of course, a special thanks to Pete Bruzik for his helms-man-ship during 2006. I am honored to have been his Vice Commodore. Under Pete’s leadership we had a significant expansion in the fleet size from: 25 to 42 feet TO 25 to 47 feet! Mike and Bev Davis were helpful to Pete in this expansion.

Getting older allows one to reminisce. I went back 10 years to see what the then 1997 Commodore, Mark Eller, had to say in his inaugural article:

I would like to start by thanking all of you for the opportunity to serve as your Commodore for 1997. I hope that we will press on and have continued boating fellowship and boating experiences on the Chesapeake Bay and for some, beyond the Bay. I would like to thank Paul and Sharon Payne for their efforts in 1996, bringing to close another wonderful year of fun in the sun both on and off the water.
Ten years later the sentiments are the same.

I intend to continue the formula that has made CCYC so successful over the years: onshore raft-ups during the off-season and theme raft-ups during the sailing season. If you have any ideas for locations, please let me know. Rich and Clair Miller have already presented a few great suggestions.

There is one change this year: “Every scheduled onshore and theme raft-up is a mandatory event. Roll will be taken!" In that regard, we have the February 3rd and 24th onshore raft-ups scheduled. See below.

Finally, I would like the members to consider holding some special “optional” events this year. More will follow in a subsequent newsletter after we have published the 2007 schedule.

Hardware Adventures With the Vice Commodore

Tank Monitoring System

  Bob Klimek, Commodore

Holding tanks and water tanks are an integral part of boating. If you are constantly wondering “How full are the holding tanks?” or “How empty are the water tanks?”, then you might consider installing a Tank Monitoring System. When we bought our C-400, we had the Snake River Electronics Ultra-8 Tank Monitoring System installed. We use it all the time to monitor our tanks and it has worked flawlessly. I am sure there are other tank monitoring systems available, but we are most familiar with the Snake River System. (See http://www.snake-river.org.)

We installed the Ultra-8 display on S/V Lucia even though we only have four tanks – 2 water and 2 holding. The ability to calibrate each tank is a plus and I think the display is more accurate.

Most importantly, a Tank Monitoring System promotes marital harmony; i.e, “Dear, be sure to fill the water tanks.” “I did it last week!” “Are you sure, I don’t want to run out of water.” “Yes, I’m sure.” You better not run out of water! With a Tank Monitoring System the exchange can be: “Dear, be sure to fill the water tanks.” “I did it last week and the acu-gage says the tanks are almost full”.

This is not an ad for the Snake River System.
