Paul Payne, Commodore
After what seemed like a terribly short
summer season, the great sailing month of September finally arrived amid
threats of hurricanes and blustery weather. But, as it turned out, we had some
of the best sailing weather in several years!
Labor Day weekend had CCYC
sailors in several parts of the Chesapeake. Sharon and I sailed SUN
DANCER across the bay to the Choptank only to "hear" that Bill and
Sharon Weeks aboard FORTNIGHT II (or is it
SUNRISE) had apparently moved the raft back to safer
waters in Herring Bay. We met Mike and Beverly Davis aboard
CHANTILLY LASS on the Tred Avon and had a delightful
sail to Dun Cove. The northern finger of the cove was packed, but we managed to
find a safe place to ride out the ensuing hurricane - that never happened. On
Sunday we came back to Annapolis on nearly favorable winds, while
SECOND WIND was in dry dock and Joan and Wayne sailed
to Broad Creek on ATLANTIS, a friend's boat. Mark and
A.J. Eller stayed close to home on the Patuxent River because of the weather.
There was even a report that the Dennisons may have been spotted going through
Knapps Narrows on FOX FIRE.
For our Indian
Summer weekend event, the Bodkin Creek caper turned into a Harness Creek
delight assisted by Jeanne and Gerry Heldorfer on the anchor boat
LOOKING CLASS. Mike, Bev and Diana Davis, aboard
CHANTlLLY LASS had also rafted up by the time Sharon
and I arrived on SUN DANCER ... just in time for happy
hour. What a beautiful sunset!
On September 22, the CCYC Fleet leaders
held a meeting to plan the fall events. We discussed Oktoberfest, Halloween,
Elections, and the Christmas party. Each will be discussed in upcoming articles
(this or future editions).
A very special thanks to Wayne Savage for
doing an excellent job in editing and publishing the "Cat Tales" newsletter for
the past two years. Mike Davis has agreed to pick up this great task, and will
become the new editor beginning with the November 1996 issue. Give him all your
assistance - write some articles!
As most of you know, the CCYC
newsletter has also been available on the World Wide Web for almost two years,
and has links to weather sites such as Thomas Point Light and a tide predictor
for Chesapeake locations.
Sharon and I have enjoyed making almost all
the club events this year and look forward to helping out next year whenever we
can, including the continue publishing Cat Tales on the web while I'm in
Florida, so stay tuned.
Our current plans include sailing SUN
DANCER down to Georgia this fall and ultimately moving back to our
home in Treasure Island, FL early next year. We offer. a standing invitation to
those of you who might venture into the Tampa Bay area to visit us at our home
and dock overlooking lovely Boca Ciega Bay.

Editor and CCYC Members
We would like to take this opportuity to
thank Paul Payne for his participation, efforts, and leadership on behalf of
the CCYC over the last 4 years. Paul and Sharon are moving back to Treasure
Island, Florida this fall-winter to continue building their software consulting
firm.
Paul and Sharon have been CCYC members for 4 of the 5 years they
have been the Annapolis area, joining shortly after their arrival. They have
been very active in our events and contributed to the enjoyment of all members
during his tenure as Commodore and Vice Commodore.
Paul is continuing to
work hard to assure that this fall's events are successful, even as he and
Sharon make ready to take the boat south and take care of the myriad of other
things necessary to accomplish a move.
Though Paul and Sharon will not
be here to enjoy the Chesapeake with us next summer, he will continue to
publish the Cat Tails on the Internet from his home port in Florida. We also
will be able to stay in touch through the Internet.
Thanks again Paul
and Sharon and stay in touch, and visit often.

Joan & Wayne Savage, Second Wind
Once
again, to kick off the change in seasons, CCYC will hold its annual
Oktoberfest. This year we will hold the event off the Magothy River, behind
Gibson Island past Purdy Point. The Raft captains will be Paul and Sharon
Payne, who will be anchoring behind Gibson about 3:00 PM.
Once again the
Um-Pa-Pa music and the Deutcher Bier Garten background will accompany our
dining on bratwurst and other German fare, while drinking specially brewed
Oktoberfest bier and gemutlich German wine. The club will provide the above,
while of course, everyone will bring real German hors d'oeuvres and cuisine to
taste and share. Polka dancing on the fore deck will follow the meal. Steve and
Pam - hope to see you there again!, or we will be dancing on the
water.
Last year we again had a great turnout for this event, and we
expect to have a great time this time as well. Come on out, have a good
time!
To help plan the event (particularly how much Oktoberfest bier to
bring) please call Joan at 301-530-0489 to let her know you will be there.

Joan & Wayne Savage & Jim Jolly,
ATLANTIS
What! Me Worry About
Hurricanes?
No problem here, just go sailing with friends with a steel
hulled, 24,000 Ib ballast, enclosed cockpit boat ATLANTIS That's how Joan and I
prepared for the Labor Day weekend sail. However, as a further measure, we
decided (with our captain - Jim Jolly) to only go to the South River's Harness
Creek where me met several other boats to wait and see where the storm would
track up the coast. So while we shared hors d'oeuvres and cocktails (listening
to the radio) whiling away the hours, the storm moved up the coast, coming
ashore in North Carolina.
By the time it was time for bed, we still
didn't know the path of the storm through the mid- Atlantic area, so we left
the radio on. Lucky for us, when we awoke, we found that the storm was tracking
northward - off the coast of Maryland and Delaware, leaving the Bay with
moderate northerly winds (10-20 knots) for Sunday.
We had a wonderful
sail down the Bay, with double headsails (wing on wing on wing). It was so good
we decided to go around Black Walnut Point, then up the Choptank to Caulk Cove.
We arrived at about 4:00 pm after a beautiful sail, dropped our hook and waited
for the other CCYC members while toasting our luck. Sorry to say we were unable
to connect with the other members who were also, or had been, in the area. Next
time (no more hurricanes, please!)

Joan & Wayne Savage, SECOND WIND
This
fall the Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club is continuing its traditions by
sponsoring the Second Annual Halloween Raft and Boat Decoration Contest. Joan
and Wayne Savage in SECOND WIND will be the Raft
Captains this year.
Bring your spider webs, whispering halyards,
gremlins in the engine, witches brew and ghost your way to the Halloween
Raft-up. We know that this year there will be many entries in the contest, so
the we will have several very valuable prizes for the various judged events.
This year's events will include: Best Boat Decoration. Best Costume.Best
Ghoulish hors d'oeuvres and treats will be served.
SECOND
WIND will drop anchor off St. Helena Island by 3:00 pm and prepare
for boarders. Which side of the island will depend on the prevailing wind
direction, so keep a sharp look-out.
Sailing up the Severn River has
become a breeze, with the new 450 Bridge, you don't have to wait for a bridge
opening. Now just sail up the River to Little Round Bay, about 8 miles. Good
water all the way, and some very interesting sights, and many beautiful houses
to keep you entertained.
We look forward to meeting many gools and
goblins, so please mark you calendars, and we will see you there with a hot rum
punch to help get you in the spirit.

New members Bea & Bob Darrow have asked for our assistance. They own
a Catalina 30 tail rig. Recently Bea had an operation on her knee and has
difficulty climbing around on deck. Hence they are asking for information
concerning converting their main sail operation to cockpit
control.
Anyone with information, or wishing to help our new members,
please give Bob or Bea a call at 410-827-6375.

Once again the annual Annapolis Sailboat show will be in the inner
harbor on October 10-14. All the Catalina Associations will have a booth near
the Catalina Yachts display in an effort to recruit new members. Your
assistance at the booth would be appreciated, and can get you a free pass.
Please call Max Munger for additional information and available
times.
Otherwise, please stop by and say hello.
