Wayne Savage, Commodore
Hello 1998! As the incoming
Commodore of the Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club, I would like to kick off a
great '98 with a warm New Year's greeting. Thanks for your continuing
participation. Let's make sailing even more interesting and fun in
1998.
1998 Sailing Schedule
To start the year right, we
will convene a season planning session at the new Savage residence on January
10, 1998 at 7:00 pm. The objective of this get-together will be to set the
sailing schedule for the New Year. (And not, incidentally, determine the raft
captains for those events.) So everyone interested in having an input to the
schedule will want to be here! We will have a pot luck dinner to help us
through the process. Give us a call at (301) 762-6752 and let Joan or me know
what you would like to bring, so we don't have 3 chocolate mouse pies and no
salad.
Other topics of discussion will be:
- Increased
participation
- Membership growth
- Club communications
We are
looking for ideas on how to improve each. Let us know what you want from our
club!
The directions to the Savage residence are:
Take I-270 North to
the Falls Road exit - go west, over I-270. Continue on Falls Road to the first
light and turn left at Wooten Parkway. Then take the first left to Pasture
Brook Way. We are the second house on the right, 1703 Pasture Brook
Way.
I look forward to this coming year with great anticipation. Your
participation will make the year a success - so I look forward to seeing you
all soon. Fair Winds!

The January meeting will be a real treat as our own Charles and Freda Gandy, Luv It, will present their experiences and advice about sailing to the Bahamas. Charles and Freda are authorities on this and even if you aren't planning a blue water experience, they have a lot of good ideas you can use that apply to sailing around the Bay. Mark your calendar for the 16th of January at the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis. Join club members for dinner at 6:00 pm by calling 410-263-4614 for reservations, then join the pre-meeting social at 7:30 upstairs.

I hope Fleet 11
will be adequately represented at Sail Expo this February in Atlantic City. The
show is shortened from previous years and it will be in the brand new
convention center near the train station. Unfortunately, the new roof is too
low to allow for fully rigged boats.
If you are planning on going, the
show is from Feb 4th through Feb 8th. Catalina Yachts will host a party Feb 5th
to celebrate the christening of the new Catalina 470 at 5:00 pm. They will
follow this on Friday, Feb 6th with a fabulous cocktail party after the show
closes. There will be a meeting of Catalina owners on Sat morning. Jim Holder
of Mainsheet will be there.
Catalina has rooms reserved at the Claridge
Hotel and Casino (the official Catalina hotel). Just call the hotel
(609-340-3400) and say you're with the Catalina group. The rate is $85/night
for Fri and Sat, cheaper during the week. There will be special buses between
the hotels and the new convention center.
This is a chance to get all
those after Christmas (before spring) deals on new sails and other equipment.
Come and see the brand new C470 and find out about plans for the new C30. Oops,
it's going to be a C310!

Our first CCYC meeting of the off-season was Friday,
November 21st, at the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis.
Commodore Mark
Eller opened the meeting with the election of Club officers for 1998. By
rousing and unanimous support, the following members were elected:
Wayne
Savage, Commodore
Bill Weeks, Vice Commodore
Joan Savage,
Treasurer
Then our newly elected Commodore introduced our guest speaker,
Richard Rothblum. Dr. Rothblum is a native Washingtonian with a BS in
mathematics, an MS in physics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. His area
of expertise is the physics of ventilation, cavitation and separation on
surface-piercing hydrofoils.
Dr. Rothblum's experience has been mainly
with model testing, and the correlation of the results of these tests with
at-sea experience. He discussed the effects of water on props and wind on
sails. The discussion was lively and very informative.

The Holiday Party was a huge success and fun for all.
Thanks to Bill and Sharon Weeks for hosting the party again this year. As part
of the evening, Sue Dennison recognized the efforts and achievements of CCYC
members as she handed out plaques and kudos to the following:
- Thanks
and a job well done!
Outgoing Commodore, Mark Eller
Outgoing Vice
Commodore Wayne Savage
- Welcome aboard
New Commodore Wayne Savage
New Vice Commodore Bill Weeks
And continuing as Treasurer Joan
Savage
Awards
- Salty Dog, Ray and Carolyn Nieves. This trophy is
given to the member who spent the most time on the wind during the year.
Classie Chassie only spent 1 weekend at the dock this
summer!
- Ol' Kedger, Pete and Karen Denholm. This trophy is given for the
most trouble or problem-ridden sailing experiences during the year. You might
be able to hear about Scimitar's qualifying events at the January
meeting; there's just not enough room here.
- Dock Box, Ken and Diane Lang.
This trophy is given to the boat that spent the most time at the dock. This is
a real boo-hoo-bie prize.
- Young Salt, Diana Davis. This trophy is for the
youngest member who has done the most sailing during the year. Diana now has
her own dinghy to bring to the raft-ups.
- Old Salt, Mike and Bev Davis.
This trophy is given to the member who turned out for the most club raft-ups.
(Yeah, I know what you first thought it meant.)
The party was great fun
as we met with Club members and shared experiences from the sailing season.
Thanks again to Bill and Sharon for opening their home to the Club, to Sue for
all the effort and time of preparing and presenting the trophies and to all the
members who attended and brought such great food and holiday spirits.
