February 1998

View from the Bridge

Wayne Savage, Commodore

I would like to welcome you to Sailing Season 1998! We have planned what I think will be an eventful season, with some new twists. As you will see in the 1998 Sailing Schedule that will be in next month's newsletter, a number of new or modified events are being planned. The changes are to broaden our appeal and encourage greater participation by current members and add new members.

An example is the first event of the season - the annual Flag Raising Brunch. We have decided to make it a reunion for all current and former CCYC members, whether they are still sailing or not. The event will give us a chance to see and talk with old friends and heighten everyone's interest in this season's sailing. Additionally, we are hopeful that some of those old members will reactivate their membership. Shortly, we will be sending invitations to everyone who has been a CCYC member. Please contact Jeannie Helldorfer, Mike Davis or me if you know someone has moved, particularly if you have a new address and phone number.

Other events include blue water sailing around the Delmarva - led by Gerry Helldorfer; a women's skill building sail and raft-up - led by Sue Dennison. Other events will follow with new themes to encourage participation.

When you receive your copy of the plan:
- put it on you refrigerator
- make a copy
- plan to participate!

We'll see you there!

February meeting
February 20th 8:00 PM

Bill Weeks has arranged for John Gordon from West Marine Products in Annapolis to give the Club a short seminar on VHF radios and GPS systems. A nice refresher course on communications always helps, as well as understanding differential GPS.

Mark your calendar for the 20th of February at the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis. Join club members for dinner at 6:00 PM by calling 410-263-4614 for reservations, then join the pre-meeting social at 7:30 upstairs.

Upcoming events

While you're marking your calendar, remember the March meeting on the 20th. Bill Weeks will be speaking on Batteries, Chargers, and Electrical Systems. Bill has been "rewiring" Fortnight III, so come for the Lessons Learned.

Atlantic City Sail Expo

Wayne and Joan Savage, Second Wind

Sailing season must be ready to begin! The weather is great, and we just returned from the Atlantic City Sail Expo. We thought Max needed some company and we had never been. Though the size of the show doesn't match the Annapolis one, it had plenty to see and really got us thinking about getting ready for the coming season.

The hit of the show was Catalina's introduction of its new 470, which was christened at a Friday evening cocktail party. We toured the 470, 400, 420 and the 380. All the time we had on Friday. We went back to the show on Saturday and went through the other booths for equipment, sailing art, clothing, publishers, small sailboats and dinghies, and charterers. We also toured Island Packet, Caliber, and Dehler boats. We would have liked to look at the Saber, Beneteau and other boats on display at the Expo, but the lines were just too long.

Additional interesting features of the show were the ongoing special events and workshops held everyday during the show, such as How to Live Unplugged, Sailing Way South, East Coast and Bahamas Navigation, Charter Chat, Cruising for Couples, and a number of Builder presentations about their boats.

Going through the new boats gets your juices flowing thinking about things you want to do to your boat, and/or how you can get the money to buy a new one. What's life without some anticipation and fantasy?
