Bill Weeks, Commodore
Good evening all. I am sitting
here wondering how to begin this article. The Fourth of July has come and gone.
The All Catalina Rendezvous in Solomons has come and gone. The hot weather has
come and not gone.
Let me start with the All-Catalina Rendezvous, June
18-20. I sailed Fortnight down to Solomons on Thursday. I
singled-handed her and had a great sail; I was on a port tack all the way and
arrived about 3 PM. Max Munger was on hand, helping to get things organized. I
spent a quiet afternoon and enjoyed myself. I went out to dinner with Mark and
AJ Eller and Rod and Pat Waite.
Friday turned out to be a busy day. A
group of us put the give-a-way bags together. Pat Waite and I folded Tee shirts
for what seemed like hours. And then we stuffed bags. We also started
registering arrivals. Lola and Earl Holliman helped with that.
Our
little club had eleven boats represented: Earl and Lola Holliman, including
daughter Sherry; Wayne and Joan Savage; Tim and Joey Feldman, with friend
Connie; Mark and AJ Eller; Rod and Pat Waite; Max and Sherma Munger, Mike and
Bev Davis, including son Robert and daughter Diana; Bob and Jane Bierly, Ray
and Carolyn Nieves, Philip and Elizabeth Padgett, including daughter Charlene;
and last but not least Sharon and I.
The Davises brought their new 42,
Ayewash, down and is it nice. I am not sure who all sailed and who drove, but a
great time was had by all.
On Saturday, I crewed on Brian Giersch's 36,
Encore, in the regatta and we were skilled, read that to mean
lucky, enough to take second place. I think the race start with eight 36s
trying to cross the line at the same time is exciting. The first race we had
light air and a good race. The second race was delayed for over an hour because
of very light wind. We finally started the race and finished in 10 to 15 knots.
It was a great sail. Brian let me drive, while he played Apeus Foredeckus. We
placed second on the first race and won the second!
Sunday was not a
pleasant day. It turned out cold and windy. I was going to stay until Monday,
but the weather forecast was not any better. Our group gathered in the
breakfast tent and they gave out door prizes. CCYC took their share. Lucky
ticket holders were Wayne Savage, Mark Eller, Robert Davis and Diana Davis. We
also won prizes for the newest boat, Ayewash, the oldest active
sailor, Earl Holliman, the biggest shoe size, Max Munger and the most bacon for
breakfast, Diana Davis. We enjoyed the morning and most of us shoved off before
noon. It was a cold, wet bash to windward. I motored-sailed all the way. I
arrived in Herring bay, cold and wet. I did a poor job of cleaning
Fortnight up, and went home. I came back the next day and
finished the job.
I was unable to make the Fourth of July cruise, as
Sharon and I went to the Outer Banks for the weekend. We have old friends down
there - he is a stink-potter, and I never let him forget it.
Another
event is taking place. Sharon and I are moving. We sold our townhouse and are
moving into an apartment. Our house on the Northern Neck will not be ready
until next spring. It is very stressful around the Weeks' household, as you
might imagine. Our new address will be: 2505 John Eppes Road, Apt #100,
Herndon, VA 20171. Our new telephone numbers are (703) 561-9069 and our fax
will be (703) 561-9039. We will be in our new apartment by the time you read
this. So if you need to contact us, that is where we will be.
Good
Sailing and "talk" to you next month.

Mike and Bev Davis, Ayewash
To
celebrate the traditional last weekend of summer, we're heading north to
Queenstown on the Chester River.
After entering the Chester River,
you'll reach Queenstown Creek about 3 miles after passing Kent Narrows. Look
for Red "2" and line up with Green "3" and then Green "5". After passing Green
"5", turn to port and look for Ayewash. We plan to be anchored by
3 PM, monitoring VHF 72 and the boat phone (703-298-4720).
Sunday we
plan to cross the Bay to the Magothy River and Sillery Bay. After you pass
through the entrance to Magothy River, turn to starboard and proceed north up
Sillery Bay. Follow the shore of Gibson Island to starboard, past Dobbins
Island to port, until you get to Green "3" and then Red "4". Look for the
raft-up as you clear Holland Point and before Purdy Point. Again, we'll be
listening on VHF 72 and the boat phone (703-298-4720).
In addition to
the usual Happy Hour at 6 PM each day, we're asking folks to bring some of
their favorite wines to share for a wine tasting. There won't be a sommelier
present, so bring something you think others will enjoy. We'll plan for red
wines on Saturday and the whites on Sunday.
We hope to see you there.
And remember to bring your favorite wine so you will be (ahem) Wine-2K
compliant.
