Pete Denholm, Commodore

As the new Commodore, I want to thank the members of the club for having confidence in me and I look forward to serving you in the coming year. At the annual CCYC Holiday Party (hosted this year by the Davis'), Bill Weeks, the outgoing Commodore, presented me with the official club plaque that lists all the past Commodores. I recognized most of the names listed and I am honored to be among such noted and contributing members of the club's past.

As the year comes to a close and we begin the new millennium, CCYC Fleet 11 has an exciting landmark approaching: The club will be 20 years old in 2000. I confirmed with our club historian, Sue Dennison, that the first CCYC Fleet 11 meeting was held at Mears Marina on Back Creek during December of 1980. At the meeting Hilda Gohrband stood up and said, "I am willing to be the Commodore". None of the other four members in attendance were willing to take the job so Hilda became Fleet 11's first Commodore. The election process has not changed much since then. The plaque Bill gave me confirms that, in fact, Hilda Gohrband was the first Commodore. She is listed as "Commodore 1981".

1981 is the year Fleet 11 received its charter from the International Catalina 30 Association. Yes, officially we are a Catalina 30 club, but we prefer to think of ourselves as progressive and without any prejudice or bias. That is why many of our members have boats other than Catalina 30s.

In summary, the CCYC was founded in 1980 and received its chartered in 1981. I am looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the club this year. Next year (2001) we can celebrate the 20th anniversary of receiving the charter. Any reason for a party! See you at the cruising planning meeting on January 9th at Savage's Landing.
